As far as food production; foraging is hard to beat. Unless you're paying the landowner, it's free. It's natural. And you get to spend time outside, often with your family. Just make sure you know what you're doing.
Look around your area and see if you can find a local expert that does wilderness walks. And I also recommend buying a book or two. Below are some suggestions. IN COLOR!
